“Mind The Gap!” 7/25/2005

I’ll keep this relatively short as we barely slept on the flight from Phoenix to London (though it was a comfortable and pleasant flight), and seeing as it is now almost 10 pm London time we are really tired and about to crash. We did manage to keep ourselves from sleeping today, and instead took the “tube” in to central London, walked around, took a “flight” on the London Eye and managed to get in a fabulous dinner. Those were the highlights. The downer was the it was really overcast and downright COLD for us Arizonans. It was a high of about 67 and a low in the 50’s which is winter weather as far as we’re concerned. Still, we kept moving, and at least it didn’t actually rain on us, which was especially nice since the weather forecast had been calling for rain for today in the previous days and weeks.

Anyhow, here are a few pictures from our few brief hours in London. They have a lot of large, old, and impressive looking buildings here, and most of them can be seen from onboard the London Eye… it truly is an amazing thing and it was worth the cost for the trip.

Brits have a lot of strange ways of saying things, but our favorite saying of the day was what was said by the subway conductors when patrons were boarding or exiting the trains… “mind the gap between the train and the platform” or oftentimes just “Mind the gap!”

Step carefully across the gap (of London) to Kiev…

London Eye 12 pound 95 pence . . .
Meeting LT priceless.

I think that there is going to be something more than worth the cost of the trip. Heh.

Oh my!! I had entirely forgotten that expression, but now that you mention it, I do remember it and quite fondly!! It is so unique, so descriptive, and so… so… British!! :)

I believe the Father said that Little Ivy’s page is already in the book for you at the NAC. Don’t worry. :)

Praying with and loving you!

They say the same thing in Hong Kong (in that quaint British accent)! Reading about London makes me want to just hop on a plane right now!

Oh BTW, we’re praying like crazy for you guys! God bless.

Great photos! Especially the first one. The London Eye didn’t exist when I was over there. I don’t really have much of a desire to ever return to London, but I do definitely want to experience the London Eye if I do ever have to return there.

Have you heard the Urban Legend about “Mind the Gap”? It’s great:

Once you are on a train platform, beware! Approaching trains sometimes disturb the large Gappe bats that roost in the tunnels. The Gappes were smuggled into London in the early 19th Century by French saboteurs and have proved impossible to exterminate. The announcement ‘Mind the Gappe!’ is a signal that you should grab your hair and look towards the ceiling. Very few people have ever been killed by Gappes, though, and they are considered only a minor drawback to an otherwise excellent means of transportation.

I was in London last weekend. I think it was as warm as on your trip although it is winter now ;-)

My favourite it “Mind the gap” too! – I recorded it so it’s my ring-Sound for my cell phone!

Best regards from Germany!
