Ukraine has the flu 2/25/2005

According to adoptiontranslation.org there is a terrible flu going around Ukraine that is so widespread they have shut down most of the schools. All of the Kyiv schools are shut down and many more beyond that - the site says the shutdown has been initiated in 2645 schools affecting more than 1.4 million students. The Kyiv public schools have been shut down since February 14!

I fear for the poor orphans who have such weakened immune systems already, and I hope it is not one of the more deadlier strains of flu. Lord, keep the babies safe and as healthy as possible!

Definitely keep the kids in your prayers.

But don’t freak out. The schools close EVERY year about this time because of the flu. It’s “normal.” The medical culture here is very much different from the US. An ambulance is called for a toothache. You stay at the hospital for a week for things that would be outpatient in the U.S. Children must wear slippers and drafts are considered deadly. (But we’re one of the few families I know with safety bars on the windows so our kids don’t fall out of our highrise. . .)

It’s taken time for me to see that the US has almost as many weird health superstitions as I see in Ukraine. But we do. . .

T7 stayed one night at the state children’s hospital when he had pnuemonia, and we were asked what school he attends. They keep track of the numbers closely and close the schools regularly.

An “epidemic” isn’t nearly as serious as it sounds. grin

Thanks, TG. Your experiences and local insights are invaluable! I hear rumors that you’re heading back to the states? When might that happen? I was hoping we might get to meet you when we’re in Kyiv.
